What is different about going solar in Piedmont

Tile and slate roofs

Clay tile and slate need careful handling and flashing made for them. We plan every mount around the tile so the roof stays watertight, and roof penetrations are covered by our 10-year warranty.

Ava Community Energy

Piedmont is part of Ava Community Energy, and homes are enrolled in Ava's Renewable 100 by default. PG&E still delivers your power and handles your solar connection.

Older electrical service

Knob and tube wiring and small panels are common in older Piedmont homes. We can replace them in the same project so your home is ready for solar, a battery and an EV.

A clean look

We use all-black panels and plan conduit runs so they stay out of sight where we can. The goal is a system that blends in with the house.

Why homeowners choose Ally

Licensed for both trades

CSLB #806465 covers electrical (C-10) and solar (C-46), so one company handles the whole job.

Our own crew

Installers are Ally employees, not subcontractors. Many have been with us for years.

Ally is a family-owned solar and electrical contractor in Richmond. Our team was first licensed in 2002 as Arco Electric, and in 2010 we became Ally Electric & Solar. Since then our own crew has helped more than 1,000 Bay Area homeowners, and in 2026 our neighbors voted us a Nextdoor Fave. Some customers have been with us a long time: the Garafolis in Oakland have been saving on their electricity bill since 2016.

"They made sure all PGE paperwork, issues and questions were addressed quickly."

Piedmont solar questions

Do I need a permit for solar in Piedmont?

Yes. The City of Piedmont requires a permit for rooftop solar and batteries, and we handle the plans, the application and the inspection. California law limits how much cities and HOAs can restrict rooftop solar, and we still design for a clean appearance.

Can you put solar on a clay tile or slate roof?

Yes. Solar on steep and tile roofs is one of our specialties. We use mounts and flashing made for tile, replace any tiles that need it, and plan the layout before we quote.

Will a battery keep my power on during an outage?

Yes, if it is set up for backup. Tesla Powerwall 3, Enphase IQ Battery 10C and FranklinWH can power your essentials or more of the house, depending on how many batteries you add. Solar recharges them during the day.

Do you replace knob and tube wiring?

Yes. Our C-10 electricians replace knob and tube and upgrade panels, often in the same project as solar. See our rewiring page.

How much does solar cost in Piedmont?

Most solar systems run $2.60 to $3.50 per watt installed, depending on the roof and the equipment. Battery systems such as Tesla Powerwall 3 or Enphase IQ Battery 10C start from $15,000 installed, before rebates. GoGreen financing is available.

What warranty do I get?

We give a 10-year labor warranty, and roof penetrations are covered for 10 years. Panel, inverter and battery warranties come from the manufacturers and transfer to you.
