What is different about going solar in Richmond
A local crew
Our office and crew are in Marina Bay, so site visits, inspections and service calls are a short drive away.
MCE Clean Energy
Richmond is part of MCE, so MCE usually supplies your power while PG&E delivers it and handles your solar connection.
Older homes, smaller panels
Many Richmond homes were built in the 1940s and 1950s and still have 60 or 100 amp panels. We check your panel first and upgrade it in the same project if solar, a battery or an EV charger needs the room.
Wind and fog by the bay
Homes near the shoreline get wind and morning fog. We size your system on a full year of usage, not one sunny month, so the savings estimate holds up.

Our story
Ally is a family-owned solar and electrical contractor in Richmond. Our team was first licensed in 2002 as Arco Electric, and in 2010 we became Ally Electric & Solar. Since then our own crew has helped more than 1,000 Bay Area homeowners, and in 2026 our neighbors voted us a Nextdoor Fave. Some customers have been with us a long time: the Garafolis in Oakland have been saving on their electricity bill since 2016.
"They made sure all PGE paperwork, issues and questions were addressed quickly."
Richmond solar questions
Do I need a permit for solar in Richmond?
Yes. The City of Richmond requires a permit for rooftop solar and home batteries. We prepare the plans, file the permit and meet the inspector, so you do not have to.
Who supplies my power after I go solar in Richmond?
Richmond is in MCE's service area. MCE supplies the electricity and PG&E delivers it. When you go solar, PG&E handles the interconnection, and your solar credits show on your bill under California's current net billing rules.
Will my older Richmond home need a panel upgrade?
Sometimes. Homes with 60 or 100 amp panels, or with Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels, often need an upgrade before adding solar, a battery or an EV charger. Our electricians do this in house. See our panel upgrade page.
Can you install an EV charger at the same time?
Yes. We install Level 2 chargers for any EV and include the permit and inspection. If your panel is full, we can plan the charger together with a panel upgrade or a battery.
How much does solar cost in Richmond?
Most solar systems run $2.60 to $3.50 per watt installed, depending on the roof and the equipment. Battery systems such as Tesla Powerwall 3 or Enphase IQ Battery 10C start from $15,000 installed, before rebates. GoGreen financing is available.
Is Ally licensed for both solar and electrical work?
Yes. Ally Electric & Solar holds CSLB license #806465 with C-10 (electrical) and C-46 (solar) classifications. Our team has been licensed since 2002, and Ally has been in business since 2010.
