PG&E EV Charger Rebates in the Bay Area: How to Get Up to $5,000 Toward a Home Charger
A plain-English guide to PG&E's Residential EV Charging program — what it pays, who qualifies, and how to claim it with a licensed local Trade Ally contractor.
A Level 2 EV charger at home means you wake up to a full battery every morning — no detours to public stations, no waiting. And right now, PG&E's Residential EV Charging program can cover a meaningful chunk of the cost for eligible Bay Area homeowners.

How much is the PG&E EV charger rebate?
Two paths: Standard, and the income-qualified Rebate Plus.
Up to half the cost of one approved charger for PG&E residential customers. Covers eligible equipment — not full installation. No Trade Ally contractor required, but you'll submit proof of purchase, photos, the serial number, and an electrician's invoice within 180 days.
Up to $2,000 for an eligible Level 2 charger and installation — or up to $5,000 when a necessary upgrade from a sub-200-amp panel to a 200-amp panel is included. Eligible costs can include equipment, materials, labor, and permit fees. Must use a Trade Ally contractor.
Who qualifies for Rebate Plus?
To be eligible for the Rebate Plus pathway, you generally need to:
- Have an active PG&E residential electric account (Community Choice Aggregation customers may still qualify if PG&E delivers your electricity).
- Own or lease a qualifying battery-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle, with current California DMV registration.
- Meet the program's income requirement — generally under 80% of your county's Area Median Income for your household size — or participate in an approved assistance program.
- Apply and receive PG&E preapproval before any work begins.
Approved assistance programs include CalFresh/SNAP, CalWORKs, income-qualified Medi-Cal, LIHEAP, WIC, SSI, and certain tribal programs. PG&E — not the contractor — makes the final eligibility and approval decision.
How to choose Ally Electric as your Trade Ally
Once PG&E approves your application, you'll get a Rebate Plus application number and a link to the contractor-selection form. From there:

Do you actually need a 200-amp panel upgrade?
Often, no — and we won't tell you otherwise just to hit the $5,000 number.
The $5,000 pathway isn't automatic. It applies only when your existing panel is rated below 200 amps and the upgrade is genuinely required to safely support your charger. It does not cover upgrading a healthy 200-amp panel to 400 amps, optional panel swaps, cosmetic work, or costs above the approved rebate.
Before we recommend anything, we run a proper load calculation and evaluate your existing service. In many Bay Area homes, correct charger sizing or an approved load-management solution allows safe Level 2 charging with no panel upgrade at all. The right answer depends on your home — not on which rebate is bigger.
Which EV chargers are eligible?
Only equipment on PG&E's current approved list qualifies. As of the early-2026 program handbook, that has included models from ChargePoint, Emporia, EVIQO, Ford, GM, Tesla, Wallbox, and Revitalize — for example the Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint Home Flex, and select Wallbox and Emporia units. The list changes, so we verify your exact make and model is currently approved before anything is purchased.
Our EV charger installation process
A typical Ally Rebate Plus project runs like this:
- Preapproval — you apply and receive your Rebate Plus number.
- Assessment — we review your panel rating, existing load, charger location, wiring route, and breaker space.
- Proposal — clear pricing, estimated rebate credit, and any remaining balance that's yours.
- Permitting & install — we pull the electrical permit and our licensed team installs the charger, dedicated circuit, breaker, and wiring.
- Inspection & rebate docs — we coordinate the final inspection and submit invoices, photos, and completion records to PG&E for payment.
For Rebate Plus, the approved rebate is applied through us to reduce your upfront cost. It's paid after installation and verification, can't exceed eligible costs, and any amount above the final rebate is the customer's responsibility — all spelled out plainly in your proposal.

Frequently asked questions
Can Ally tell me whether I'll qualify for Rebate Plus?
We'll explain the program and the documents you'll need, but PG&E and the program administrator determine eligibility. Get written preapproval before starting your project.
Is a panel upgrade always required for Level 2 charging?
No. We run a load calculation first. Correct charger sizing or load-management equipment often allows safe Level 2 charging without touching your panel.
Can I use an EV charger I already bought?
Possibly — but it must be an eligible model and meet the program's purchase and installation rules. We'll verify the exact model number and timing before you rely on it.
Can the rebate pay for the whole installation?
It may cover eligible costs up to the program limit. Any non-eligible charges, or costs above the final approved rebate, remain the customer's responsibility.
Can I combine this with another rebate?
PG&E may allow combining qualifying programs, but total incentives can't exceed the project's eligible cost, and each program's rules must be met.
