What is different about going solar in Mill Valley
Shade and fog
Redwoods and morning fog cut solar output on many roofs. We measure the shade before we quote and give you an honest production estimate, even when the answer is a smaller system.
MCE Clean Energy
Mill Valley is part of MCE, so MCE usually supplies your power while PG&E delivers it and handles your solar connection.
Backup during shutoffs
Much of the Mill Valley hillside is in high fire-threat areas, where PG&E can turn off power in dry, windy weather. A battery keeps your essentials running.
Older cottages and wiring
Older Mill Valley homes can have knob and tube wiring or small panels. Our electricians can update them in the same project. See our rewiring page.

Our story
Ally is a family-owned solar and electrical contractor in Richmond. Our team was first licensed in 2002 as Arco Electric, and in 2010 we became Ally Electric & Solar. Since then our own crew has helped more than 1,000 Bay Area homeowners, and in 2026 our neighbors voted us a Nextdoor Fave. Some customers have been with us a long time: the Garafolis in Oakland have been saving on their electricity bill since 2016.
"They made sure all PGE paperwork, issues and questions were addressed quickly."
Mill Valley solar questions
Do I need a permit for solar in Mill Valley?
Yes. The City of Mill Valley requires a permit for rooftop solar and batteries. We prepare the plans, file the permit and meet the inspector.
Is solar worth it with redwood shade?
It depends on the roof. Some homes have plenty of sun above the trees and some do not. We measure the shade first and tell you plainly if a battery alone, or a smaller array, makes more sense.
Will a battery keep my power on during a PG&E shutoff?
Yes, if it is set up for backup. During a shutoff the battery powers the circuits you choose, and solar recharges it during the day. How long it lasts depends on what you run. Most homes back up the fridge, lights, internet and some outlets, and add a second battery for more.
Do you work in Marin from Richmond?
Yes. Our office is in Richmond, a short drive over the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, and our own crew does the installs.
How much does solar cost in Mill Valley?
Most solar systems run $2.60 to $3.50 per watt installed, depending on the roof and the equipment. Battery systems such as Tesla Powerwall 3 or Enphase IQ Battery 10C start from $15,000 installed, before rebates. GoGreen financing is available.
What warranty do I get?
We give a 10-year labor warranty, and roof penetrations are covered for 10 years. Panel, inverter and battery warranties come from the manufacturers and transfer to you.
