What is home electrification, and where do I start?
Home electrification is replacing gas appliances — furnace, water heater, stove, dryer — with efficient electric ones, usually alongside adding an EV charger and often solar and battery. Almost every plan starts with your electrical panel: it has to have the capacity and the physical space to carry the new loads. That's why we begin with a load calculation before recommending anything.
Do I need to upgrade my electrical panel to electrify my home?
Often, yes. Many Bay Area homes have 100-amp service, which can run out of room once you add a Level 2 EV charger, a heat pump, and an induction range. We run a load calculation to tell you whether you need a 200-amp upgrade, whether a smart panel like SPAN can avoid an upgrade, or whether your existing panel is fine. How much does an electrical panel upgrade cost in the Bay Area?
Most residential main panel upgrades in the Bay Area run about $2,000 to $4,000, depending on service size, panel location, meter changes, and any PG&E service upgrade required. Every home is different, so we give you a firm quote after a free inspection.
Can I add an EV charger without upgrading my panel?
Sometimes. A Level 2 charger draws about 40 amps continuously, so it depends on your remaining panel capacity. Options include a dedicated circuit on your existing panel, a smart panel that manages loads, or a load-management EV device. We'll size it as part of your whole electrification plan so it's also ready for future additions. See EV charger installation.
What order should I electrify my home in?
Generally: (1) confirm or upgrade your electrical panel, (2) add the biggest or most urgent load — often an EV charger or a failing water heater/furnace replaced with a heat pump, (3) add induction cooking and electric laundry, and (4) add solar and battery to power it all cleanly. Sequencing it under one plan avoids paying for the same panel and permit work twice.
What is a heat pump, and does Ally install them?
A heat pump is a highly efficient electric system that both heats and cools your home (or, for water heaters, heats your water) by moving heat rather than burning gas. Ally handles the electrical side — dedicated circuits, disconnects, and panel capacity — so your HVAC or plumbing contractor can install the equipment, or we coordinate directly with them.
Are there rebates or tax credits for electrifying my home?
Yes — California programs like TECH Clean California and BayREN offer rebates on heat pumps and related work, SGIP can offset battery storage, and federal tax credits (25C/25D) apply to qualifying improvements. Amounts and eligibility change frequently, so we give you a current list for your specific project. This isn't tax advice — check with your tax professional.
Do you handle permits and PG&E coordination?
Yes. We pull the required electrical permits, submit load calculations, and coordinate any PG&E service changes and city inspections. Handling the permitting and utility side in-house is a big part of why homeowners hire one licensed contractor instead of juggling several.

Either. Some homeowners electrify everything in one project (most cost-efficient for shared permit and panel work); others phase it over a few years as appliances age out. Either way, we build the plan so today's work doesn't have to be redone later — for example, sizing your panel now for the loads you'll add next.
